Gigging as a bar band, the group quickly changed its name after finding out that another band of the same name (not the Velvet Underground, who by then had also changed their name) had signed a recording contract. The show was not recorded but the set list has been preserved. They were initially known as the Warlocks coincidentally, the Velvet Underground (similarly influenced by avant-garde music) was also using that name on the East Coast. The band's first show was at Magoo's Pizza located at 639 Santa Cruz Avenue in suburban Menlo Park, California, on May 5, 1965. It was the opening track on side two of the record. “Morning Dew,” was released on the band’s debut album in 1967. If you ever saw the Grateful Deal live and heard them perform “Morning Dew,” you would understand what my friend was talking about instantly. It was a tough list to put together because from 1967 to 1977 the Grateful Dead released so much great material. The songs have been chosen in chronological order. Any true Dead Head will absolutely know these songs, but the average listener may not. We though it would be more interesting to publish an article that picked out 10 great Grateful Dead songs that the causal listener may not be aware of. There is need to publish another list just like that. They all contain the same songs, Sugar Magnolia, Casey Jones, and so on. Ther are so many Top 10 Grateful Dead songs articles that have been published.
